Resurgence
Created in 2024, these works were inspired by the CT scans I underwent in the summer of 2023 after I accidentally fractured my right radius. When I received the scans, I was captivated by their strangely compelling aesthetic. Seeing a peculiar charm in these medical images, I decided to reinterpret them through painting.
One of the works, Lili in Slices, acrylic on canvas, 101 × 76 cm (39.76 × 29.92 in.), 2024, presents a complete representation of the CT scan. The scan divided my right forearm into multiple sectional slices to pinpoint the exact location of the fracture. Each grid in the painting represents an individual scan—pink grids indicate healthy areas, while black grids mark the injured sections.
The other two works, Slice No.1, watercolor on paper, 55 × 54 cm (21.65 × 21.26 in.), 2024, and Slice No.2, watercolor on paper, 56 × 55 cm (22.05 × 21.65 in.), depict enlarged details of the most affected areas. I rendered these sections as vivid, blooming flowers, using them as metaphors for resilience and vitality.
When I first saw the CT images, I was fascinated by the intricate and tenacious structure of the human body. This sense of wonder became the foundation for the series, exploring the interplay between bodily scars and the strength of the will. The subtle emotional shifts throughout my recovery shaped the rich details within Lili in Slices.
其中一幅作品 "Lili in Slices," acrylic on canvas, 101 × 76 cm (39.76 × 29.92 in.), 2024,完整地呈現了整份CT掃描的圖像。掃描將我的右前臂分割成多個截面,以精確定位骨裂的位置。畫中的每個格子代表一個單獨的掃描——粉色格子表示健康區域,而黑色格子標記了受傷的部分。
另外兩幅紙上水彩 "Slice No.1," watercolor on paper, 55 × 54 cm (21.65 × 21.26 in.), 2024 和 "Slice No.2," watercolor on paper, 56 × 55 cm (22.05 × 21.65 in.),則描繪的是受影響最嚴重的區域的放大細節,我將其渲染成生動、盛開的花朵,以比喻生命的韌性和活力。
